Abstract

Abstract

The higher education landscape has arguably become one of the most arduous to traverse. More so in the African context, where a host of variables continiously challenge educators to reflect critically on their philosophies and practices as they engage an ever-changing audience. In this book, a critical engagement with theological education in Africa is offered. As the book originates from South Africa, it is presented as a South African perspective, although contributors are situated accross the African continent and abroad. The common denominator is that all contributers are, in some way or another, invested in theological education in Africa. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the insights it offers on four main areas of theological education: A historical and current orientation on theological edcuation in Africa, some paradigm shifts in theological education in Africa, ministerial formation needs versus theological education challenges, and a critical reflection on elective models and methods. The book presents the original and innovative research of scholars for fellow scholars involved in theological higher education as it is grounded in the respective fields of interest of each contributor. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex African theological higher education landscape that is also mindful of post-COVID-19 realities. Methodologically the work draws on a combination of methods, including literature studies, empirical work, and in some cases sectional offerings from doctoral studies, as indicated in the various chapters.

Abstract

Karl Barth's commentary on Paul's epistle to the Romans, in its two editions (1919 and 1922), is one of the most significant works published in Christian theology in the 20th century. This book, which landed "like a bombshell on the theologians' playground," still deserves close scrutiny one hundred years after its publication. In this volume, New Testament scholars, philosophers of religion and systematic theologians ponder the intricacies of Barth's "expressionistic" commentary, pointing out the ways in which Barth interprets Paul's epistle for his own day, how this actualized interpretation of the apostle's message challenged the theology of Barth's time, and how some of the insights he articulated in 1919 and in 1922 have shaped Christian theology up to our day. With his commentary, the young Swiss pastor paved the way for a renewed, intensely theological interpretation of the Scriptures. The volume thus centers of some of the key themes which run through Barth's commentary: faith as divine gift beyond any human experience or psychological data, the Easter event as the turning point of the world's history, God's judgment and mercy and God's one Word in Jesus Christ. This volume represents a major contribution to the interpretation of Karl Barth's early thought. -- Publisher's description.

Abstract

The ABCs of Complaint: The Book of Lamentations Through the Ages analyzes the biblical Book of Lamentations. Central to the book are the questions: How can we translate the Hebrew text while at the same time taking into consideration the poetic devices of the source text and insights from recent research into biblical Hebrew grammar? What are the literary forms and content of the poems? How have readers read, understood and used Lamentations over the course of its reception history? The author examines Lamentations' literary form, its religion-historical, theological and historical content, and its contexts. In addition, selected stations along Lamentations' nomadic journey through reception history are explored. The book combines historical-critical, literary and form-critical methods. The five poems of Lamentations are analyzed according to the categories orientation (being at equilibrium), disorientation (a state of being out of balance), and reorientation (a state of existence where equilibrium has been restored), inspired by Walter Brueggemann's typology of psalms. Based on a meticulous philological analysis of the Hebrew text, the author presents a new, transparent Norwegian translation. A distinctive feature of this translation is that it, in several instances, interprets the Hebrew perfect (qatal) as a so-called precative perfect ("perfect of prayer"). The ABCs of Complaint is relevant for students of theology and religion, researchers, church employees, lay people, and all who are interested in Biblical lament literature and images of God from a historical perspective on theology and religion.

Abstract

How did it all begin? How do we even start to engage the differences between creation narratives in the Christian Bible and modern scientific theory? The authors of this book explore hermeneutic approaches and developments in biblical studies to set the scene for a religious approach. This approach is open to the possibility that a literalist approach to Scripture is, in fact, the most unjustifiable reading of the Bible. This may profoundly affect how we view God, the cosmos, and even ourselves. To be able to read the Bible from the perspective of an open present and future paves the way for suppressed uncertainties to be liberated. This paves the way for humankind to freely question all things without being enslaved by imposed religious dogma. This is not to say that religion has served its purpose, but it is far from it. With the rise of technological advancements come other social and anthropological problems, not to mention the challenge we face on a global scale with climate change, et cetera. Just as we dare to peek over the edge of a future without religion, the authors bring us back to the fundamental teachings of faith traditions, Christianity in particular. They remind us that the solutions to these challenges are to be found in us becoming 'better humans'. Becoming 'better humans' brings us back into the arena of faith traditions. When technology may lead to social disconnection and narcissism, religion calls for love of self and neighbour. Where greed-inspired advancements threaten the future of our planet, religion teaches us to be in relationship with our environment and to be custodians of it.

Abstract

Summer of 1968: two young Spaniards arrive in Rome with a letter and a project to export. They are Francisco (Kiko) Argüello and Carmen Hernández. So, fifty years after its foundation, the Neocatechumenal Way begins, and this volume is among the first historiographical researches about it. The overall picture arising from the comparative analysis of archival documents and unpublished texts places the Neocatechumenal Way within the historical events that affected the Church of Rome from the end of the Second Vatican Council to the present today. From the study of a minor reality, the work aims at shedding light on more general questions: from the reception of the Second Vatican Council to the relations between the episcopates; from the publication of the New Dutch Catechism to the organized entrance of laymen and laity in the Church; from the liturgical reform to 'liturgical liberalism'.
